Who writes those crime thrillers with hero cops?
It turns out tollbooth workers. Michael Martin, a tollbooth worker in NY, is the brain behind the crime thriller Brooklyn’s Finest.
Writing a screenplay was not what Martin was planning to do until his car got totaled in an accident, and he needed a car. To get money for his new car he entered screenwriting content for the prize. Though he took film courses in college, this was his first stab at it. He came second and did not get the prize. But as luck would have it, it got attention of producer Mary Viola who was looking for a new voice for the sequel to New Jack City. Now Finest is an exiting and sought after project, and the best names in Hollywood are lining up to join: Gere, Hawkw, Cheadle, and even Mel Gibson at one point showed interest. So what is Finest about? It is about Brooklyn cops with three different storylines. Martin says his experience in working in a company that got into trouble with Feds for mob connection is the inspiration for the story. They plan to start shooting Finest in May this year in Brooklyn where Martin started the script. So what is he doing now? He is working for the Transit Authority, but when he is not on duty in the tunnels he is writing New Jack City 2.
So next time you have a car trouble, do not get mad. Just pull out the old pencil and start working on a script. You never know.
