Can I get jury summons in Wal-Mart?

Yes you can, even if you are not shopping for one. A judge sent officers to Wal-Mart to issue jury summons to the unsuspecting shoppers.

apr08_jurybox.jpgIn Lima, Ohio, a presiding judge in a child rape case was in a bind. When he dismissed six potential jurors from the pool at the objection of the defense, he ran out of prospective jurors. To solve the shortage, he sent three police officers to the near by Wal-Mart to look for potential jurors. Any Allen County resident who is a registered voter qualifies to be on the jury. So the officers asked those two questions to everyone, from shoppers to just anyone hanging around. Anyone who said yes to both questions qualified and was issued jury summons. They served the jury summons to twenty people: 12 for Monday appearance and 8 for Tuesday. People who came to the court for work or just visiting could not escape either: one man was served the jury summons as he was finishing up his divorce.

Even if you are called for jury duty, it does not mean you will serve on the jury. Either the defense or the persecution can dismiss you without any reason. There is always that hope.
