Do men tolerate discrimination more than women?

Yes, according to a survey conducted by the University of Southern California. They found that men are more likely to accept discrimination than woman, though the gap between men and women depends on the nature of discrimination.

apr08_racialprofiling.jpgThe survey taken in 2002 asked 3,300 people about their views on five different cases of discriminations: obese people, immigrants with little education, Black motorists, Arab-American air travelers, and people with genetic problems. The difference between the percentage of men and women that would tolerate discrimination is reported as sex-gap. When it comes to obesity the gap is 20% — that is 20% more men would tolerate discrimination against fat people than women. For racial profiling of black motorist the gap is 17%. For Arab-American air travelers the gap was the least among the five categories, but they were second in overall acceptance of discrimination by both men and women. In general, people are most likely to tolerate discrimination against immigrants, and least likely to accept discriminatory practices of the health insurance companies against people with genetic problems.

Edward McCaffery, co-author of the study, said:

“We have found that, while discrimination in its traditional forms - based on race and gender - may be receding somewhat, discrimination in other domains, as based on appearance, persists.”
