Is Clinton telling tall tales about health care systems?

Apparently so. Did you hear Clinton talk about a hospital that denied care to a pregnant woman since she could not pay $100 fee, and she later died along with her baby? Never happened. It is just a story.

apr08_clinton_talk.jpgFor the last month or so, as an example of how bad the health care system has become Clinton has repeated a story that haunted her. The story involves an uninsured 35 year old Pizza Hut manager who was having some complications with her pregnancy. Clinton said:

“It hurts me that in our country, as rich and good of a country as we are, this young woman and her baby died because she couldn’t come up with $100 to see the doctor.”

The hospital in question said though the woman and her baby died, she was under care and was never turned away. So how did Clinton get the story in the first place? She heard it from Bryan Holman, a sheriff’s deputy who hosted a party for Clinton before Ohio primary. Holman, in turn, heard it from someone else. You know how these things go. But Clinton liked the story enough to repeat with vivid details without ever checking the facts.

They hospital came out and demanded that Clinton stop repeating the story immediately. The Clinton camp responded saying though they thoroughly check every story “in this case, we did try but were not able to fully vet it.” They could not just contact the hospital? Even if they had not time to check it out, why did they tell a story when they were not sure if it was true or false?

We all know how bad the healthcare system is: it is too easy to find terrifying events and incidents. But even then Clinton chose a story over the truth.

Mrs Clinton seems to have learned her lessons well from the “Harry and Louise” advertisement that derailed her husband’s health care plan 1993. That a fictional, but touching story has more impact than a true, but dry story.

Is Clinton not telling tall tales about everything?
