Who are easier to fool online: men or women?

Men. The just released IC3 report says when it comes to online men are easy prey for scam artists.

apr08_onlinefraud.jpgThe IC3 report analyzed over 206 thousand online fraud complaints in 2007 and found that for every dollar women lost to online crooks, men lost a dollar and 67 cents. And of the total complaints filed, more than half, about 57%, came from men. Among all internet scams, the so called investment fraud is the most lucrative for the con artists taking an average of more than $3,500 from each victim. Their favorite victims were overwhelmingly male. Men also duped more often by check fraud with an average loss of $3,000 thousand and by Nigerian email fraud with average loss of $2,000. Women, on the other hand, lost money in online auction scams, but no more than men and the average loss were much lower, about $480 per incident.

Overall, internet fraud has gone up by 20% last year compared to a year before: theĀ  2007 total loss of $240 million is $40 million more than that of 2006. Does not matter how many security features are used, unless people stop being gullible and greedy internet fraud will keep increasing.

Did the study consider what percentage of the aggregate online activity is by women? Can’t believe that men are more gullible than women

  2. This study uncovers nothing new. It’s a fact known for ages that men are more gullible than women. Why should it be any different when it comes to online scams?
