Is 26 thousand pounds of beef enough for your BBQ?

Apparently not for people in Uruguay. On Sunday they entered the Guinness Book of world records by cooking up the biggest BBQ ever: 26,400 lbs in all.

apr08_uruguaybbq.jpgSummer is almost here and it is time to fire up those grills again. But Uruguay did it in style this year. They called the army to set up a mile long grill. It took about six metric tons of charcoal for the gigantic cookout to BBQ more than 26 thousand pounds of meat. How many cooks did it take to finish the cooking - 1,250 of them. Forget about all the advice against too many cooks in the kitchen: the 20,000 people had no complaint about the food. The event was organized by the National Meat Institute to promote Uruguay’s beef export. Beef is one of the main sources of revenue for the country and generated over three quarter of a billion dollar last year.

Uruguay broke the previous BBQ record held by Mexico by 8,000 lbs.
