Would it stop crime if gun sales are caught on camera?

That is what Wal-Mart would like us to believe. They are going to keep selling guns, but would film the purchase as part of the record. They say the new system would help fight crime.

apr08_walmartgun.jpgReally? Let’s look at the ATF data: almost half of the guns involved in criminal activities are purchased through a proxy or a straw buyer for someone who cannot buy it legally. But Wal-Mart introduced the new system of computerized log of videos for all sales hoping to stop guns from falling in the wrong hands. Wal-Mart is going to develop a new gun trace log that would identify anyone whose gun was used in a crime. Wal-Mart already has a strong point of sale check but that has not been very successful in stopping crime with guns. It is not clear if adding footage of the sales to the record would reduce crime. Criminals can easily find a way to bypass the system and get the guns they want. Surely it gives an illusion of extra safety, but that is all. So long as there are enough guns available, they will find their way to the hands of criminals.

One way to make sure is to stop gun sales, but that gets people all up in arms over the right to bear arms.
