Who said if they cannot afford rice let them eat potatoes?
No, France is not a rice eating country. Facing shortage of grains and increased food prices, Government of Bangladesh has ordered its military to eat potatoes instead of their usual meal of rice.
The food prices has almost doubled in past year, and in recent days violent protests have erupted around the world due to shortage of basic staples like rice, wheat, and beans. All poor nations are suffering, but Bangladesh got a double whammy: last year they lost 3 million tons of food due to flood and cyclone. The government was looking for a way to avoid possible protests and impending famine. Their prayers were answer in shape of potatoes. Bangladesh almost doubled their production of potatoes this year, so they are both cheaper and readily available. But there is a catch: people there love rice, but not potatoes. So the government has ordered all its troops to eat potatoes. That includes army, navy, air force, and police - all half million of them.
But do not worry. Unlike the time when people were asked to eat cakes, there is no fear of revolt here.
