Would you go to church if it comes to a nearby bar?
Think about it. No more wrestling with the difficult decision of going to a bar to watch the game or attending the church. The Country Rock Church in Ohio has brought its Sunday sermon to the Pub Lounge in Sidney. So you can enjoy beer and bible at the same time.
The attendance in the Country Rock Church has been dwindling for a while and its head pastor Rev. Chris Heckaman is trying to find out ways to attract new members. He has come up with some creative ideas to reach the unwilling. The bar is the latest pick for his new branch for Sunday sermon. According to the Church website the new place features top regional bands of beer, pizza, chicken wings, rowdy fun, and most importantly a short message. So far Heckaman is happy with the response: about 100 people joined the inaugural service on Sunday. He expects more people to join as the words get out.
If you are wondering what was the topic of sermon here is a hint: the pastor talked about how life is like a ride on the bar’s mechanical bull.

Read 2 Corinthians 6:14 and 17. These verses say “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light and darkeness?” (KJV) and verse 17 says “Wherfore come out from among them and touch not the unclean thing : and I will receive you.” (KJV) I do not see anywhere in these verses that say that we are to bring God down to the worlds level. God is to be high and lifted up. I seriously doubt we will be doing the “boot scootin boogie” and line dancing in heaven so I dont see how that is a witness here on earth. I am Praying hard for this church and for anyone who supports this church in a bar.
Thanks Charity. Your input is great and well thought.
I think that the media has portrayed Country Rock Church as just setting up a church inside a bar for the same of establishing another congregation. That is far from factual.
Our hope is that we will be able to bring a message to folks that will make them want to seek or re-engage on a faith journey with God. We are hoping to disciple people one-on-one during what may be very intense times of brokenness in their lives. This is about changing lives, oftentimes lives steeped in generational destructive behavior and passing that behavior on to other generations right now.
Corinth was a pretty rough place when the church was established there. Immorality, idolatry … all kinds of bad things. And yet the church was established right there in the middle of it all — to bring hope, love, and compassion — and to change lives.
Thank you for your prayers.
