How often can one visit porn sites while at work?(0)

Let’s face it though companies prohibit and try to block adult sites, people do surf adults sites when at work. But a government employee in Japan may have broken the record. He has visited adult sites more than 780,000 times in just nine months. At his peak, he logged 170,000 hits on multiple sites in last July alone.

may08_computerwork.jpgThe 57-year-old man worked in the construction division of the city government office of Kinokawa in western Japan. Though he was spending way too much time and visiting the sites very frequently throughout the day, no one in the office had any clue. After nine months, this February his habit came to light when his computer was repeatedly infected with the same virus. That prompted the officials to check his online activities. People where shocked to find the frequency of his visits. He was visiting sites outside Japan that were not blocked by the security set up for the city computers. From June 2007 to February 2008, he had logged 780,000 visits to various adult sites. He was suspended for three months and demoted with a $190 monthly pay cut.

The question that comes to mind is that how he got time to do any work if he spent so much time watching porn. But then he works for the government, and so it is not clear if he did any work at all.

Was your adopted baby sold to the black market?(0)

There is a high chance if you got the child from Vietnam. In a nine-page report U.S. Embassy says that Vietnam has failed to prevent illegal and unethical practice of baby sold for adoption. Corruption and fraud are on the raise for the lucrative child adoption black market.

apr08_vietnamesebaby.jpgIn 2003, U.S. imposed ban on all adoption from Vietnam due to corruption. The ban was lifted in 2006, and since then there is a boom in adoption from Vietnam. Angelina Jolie’s much publicized adoption fueled the fire. In the first 18 months since the ban was lifted a total of 1,200 babies were adopted by American families. That is more than two babies per day. In 2007 the adoption jumped more than 400 percent. The adoption also has become a lucrative business. American couples are ready to pay $25,000 for a baby, and some agencies pay $10,000 of that money to the Vietnamese orphanages. The increase in demand and the lure of the money have helped flourish a black market. People are scouring villages to buy babies; hospitals are coercing poor mothers to give up infants and then selling them; relatives are giving away babies for money without parents’ permission. The babies are sold to the brokers for as little as $400 dollars, and they sell it to the orphanages for a few thousands making a huge profit. Given the lucrative nature of the business, Vietnam government is not doing much to stop it.

Fortunately the current agreement expires in September, and it is not expected to be renewed. U.S. will impose the ban again, at least for a short time.

It is an irony that parents with good intentions are helping the black market to flourish and hurting the babies they wanted to help in the first place.

How many whales to be killed to know how they live?(1)

Around 1000 a year, if you asked the Japanese whaling industry. And they are upset they were able to get only 551 compared to their target of 935 for this year.

whale_minke1.jpgEver since the ban on whaling went into effect in 1985, Japanese whaling industry has been using a loophole International Whaling Commission’s ban that allows whales to be captured for research purposes . If you went to the Japanese whaling association’s website, all you’ll get to see if vague claims statements about the need for lethal research. Even if you were to take their made up reasons for needing to kill the whales to do research on them, it’s not at all clear as to what kind of research would require close to 1000 whales a year! And the Japanese have been getting away with this for more than two decades. As with everything else in fine there is one set of rules for the rich and another the poor.

Do you happen to be a Rhino poacher in Nepal or India who wants to get away with it? Try to hook up with a few other fellow poachers and start a Rhino research institute.

Why there are so many earthquakes in last few days?(0)

First, there were lots of mysterious earth quakes near central Oregon for the past ten days, and now on Saturday there was a strong 7.1 quake in Macquarie Island, a remote Australian territory. What’s going on?

apr08_oregonquakes.jpgIn Oregon, scientists have detected more than 600 quakes in the past ten days - three with magnitude more than 5.0 and the strongest one measuring 5.4. Quakes normally happen along the edge of tectonic plates as they shift against each other. The quakes in Oregon are detected on the edge but 40 miles inside. The large number of small quakes can happen before a volcanic eruption, but there is no volcano there. Also, usually a major shock is followed by lots of little ones, but that is not what is happening in Oregon. So you can see why even the scientists are confused. They are planning to send a research ship to collect water samples to find out more about the quakes.

The 7.1 quake was detected on the other side of the globe: 1000 miles south of the New Zealand. All these strange quakes in such short time make you wonder what’s happening down under the crust we live on.

And Monday night, April 14, there was an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 in southwestern Guatemala.

Did China already get a gold medal for most killings?(0)

Yes, and this one is from Amnesty International. The group could show China have killed at least 470 people in 2007, far more than any other country in the world. Since China keeps the number secret, it could be as high as 8,000.

apr08_chinaexecution.jpgIt is estimated that the Olympic host would execute 374 people during the game alone. In China, you can get death penalty for 60 different crimes including damaging electric power lines, stealing, selling fake medicines, and tax fraud. And you get shot in the head. Every week China killed 9 people and additional 35 were sentenced to death. The worldwide numbers for last year are 24 executions and 64 death sentences per week, making it a total of 1,252 executions in 24 countries. The top five countries - China (407), Iran (317), Saudi Arabia (143), Pakistan (135) and the US (42) - account for close to 90% of the total known executions. It is interesting to note that US is on the same list with China and Iran when it comes to executions.

Last year alone about 3,347 people were given death sentence in 51 countries, and right now up to 27,500 people are waiting on death row.

Is Jimmy Carter going to meet terrorist Hamas leader?(0)

Yes, Carter on his upcoming Middle East trip is going to meet up with exiled Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal. Whitehouse, which views Hamas as a terrorist organization, expressed strong objection. Even some Democrats expressed concerns.

apr08_carter.jpgCarter, who won a Nobel Peace Prize and negotiated peace between Egypt and Israel in 1978, is trying to help Israel and Palestinian together. Despite objection from all sides about his meeting with a known terrorist group he plans to meet Hamas. He said:

“I feel quite at ease in doing this. I think there’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that, if Israel is ever going to find peace with justice concerning the relationship with their next-door neighbors, the Palestinians, that Hamas will have to be included in the process…. I think that it’s very important that at least someone meet with the Hamas leaders to express their views, to ascertain what flexibility they have, to try to induce them to stop all attacks against innocent civilians in Israel and to cooperate with the Fatah as a group that unites the Palestinians, maybe to get them to agree to a cease-fire - things of this kind.”

Do you have to attend church to be a good Catholic?(0)

Most of the Americans don’t think so. More than two in three Catholics believe that they can be faithful without the trouble of going to church every Sunday.

apr08_popebobblehead.jpgThe survey released on the eve of Pope Benedict XVI first visit to America found an overwhelming support for him: eight in ten Catholics are happy with the new pope. However, only one third of 64 million Catholics attend Sunday Mass. One in three goes to confession less than once a year, and almost half never do. People over 45 and younger than 25 are most faithful: observing Lent, abstaining from meat on Fridays, believing in devotion to saints. But everyone is excited in the papal visit: half a million tickets are already sold for the two city events during his six day visit. There is, of course, the unavoidable commercial aspect to it all: from hawking merchandise to scalping tickets on the eBay. Only for a few dollars, you can get Pope soap to clean your sins and have eternal fun with Pope bobblehead.
